Despite the practice of genital mutilation being officially banned in Kenya and many other countries, it continue in secret, without compliance with basic health and hygiene standards. The risks of infections are high. In practicing genital mutilation, the community believes it can ensure values such as the virginity of the woman or her fertility, the transition to adulthood, or a condition for marriage.
The local Non Govermental Organization AVSI deals with the problem by getting in touch with local communities and trying to change the mentality from within each family.
