Joining efforts with Deserto Verde (Green Desert) in 2010 was a logical move to fight poverty since ABBA's water supply programme is complementary to their land recovery programme. In fact, the rural population is subject to constant food crises due to rain scarcity and irregularities. Their staple crops are mile and sorghum. Livestock is however the main source of income.

The combination of greening of the land and access to water are the basic conditions that allow the population to stay in their villages even during the dry season. One of the effects is to favour permanent settlements  and the development of a local economy and consequently the decrease of the migratory flow of men in search of work towards the neighbouring cities and nations.
